Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU), the only comprehensive university established by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is deeply committed to contributing to the development of Tokyo through strong ties with local communities and innovative research on urban and social challenges.

As a degree program offered entirely in English, TMU plans to establish a new faculty, the Faculty of Global Innovation and Development (GLIDe), in April 2028. Conducted in English, GLIDe will provide an interdisciplinary learning environment that transcends the conventional boundaries between the humanities and sciences. By organically integrating five specialized fields: regional society, international politics, development economics, urban science, and ecological conservation, GLIDe aims to cultivate individuals who can identify the essence of global and urban challenges and create new value, going beyond simply solving problems. Students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds will learn together in the same classrooms while also engaging in experiential learning beyond the classroom through study abroad programs, domestic exchange programs, and corporate internships. (This project is currently in the planning stage and is subject to change.)

In addition, beginning in April 2027, TMU will launch T-GLIPs (TMU Global Leaders for Innovation Programs), a university-wide initiative that enables students to systemically pursue specialized education in English within existing faculties and departments. The program will initially be offered in four departments of the Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences: Department of Geography, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Department of Applied Chemistry for Environment, and Department of Tourism Science, and will subsequently be expanded to other faculties and departments across TMU. T-GLIPs offered through the Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences, prepare students to become future leaders in science, engineering, and urban innovation. Furthermore, since April 2015, the Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science has provided a degree program that can be completed entirely in English.

GLIDe will organically connect the five specialized fields of Regional Society, International Politics, Development Economics, Urban Science, and Ecological Conservation to develop human resources who can perceive the essence of global and urban issues, go beyond solving issues, and create new value.
English is the primary language of instruction at GLIDe. Students from diverse backgrounds learn together in the same classroom, broadening their perspectives through exposure to different cultures and values. Beyond the classroom, opportunities such as study abroad programs, domestic exchange experiences, and corporate internships foster the global outlook and adaptability needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

T-GLIPs is a degree program conducted entirely in English, designed to cultivate students with strong disciplinary expertise and a broad international perspective within their respective fields of study.
T-GLIPs offered through the Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences prepare students to become future leaders in science, engineering, and urban innovation. Through interdisciplinary coursework, hands-on laboratory training, fieldwork, internships, problem-based learning, and advanced research, students develop specialized expertise alongside a global perspective on urban and environmental challenges.

Department of Biological Sciences 
Aspiring biologists can gain a broad scope of academic experience in our Department of Biological Sciences through a degree program offered completely in English. It is possible to earn all credits required for graduation in English alone, or through a combination of Japanese and English classes. Our faculty members are internationally recognized researchers in a variety of research fields, including botany, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, neuroscience, and zoology.
